Semester Hours is a term I first heard when I was in high school trying to go through the long, strange and boring process of finding a major.
After looking into my classes I noticed all my classes said “3 semester hours.”
That meant nothing to me. If you read it, it sounds like you need 3 hours of the class in your semester, which does not make sense at all! You can’t be qualified to pass a class after three hours.
Then I showed up at University and EVERYTHING made so much more sense.
Those 3 semester hours mean that you take the class for three hours a week – either over one day, two days or in three.
I don’t know why schools do this, I don’t know why they don’t explain this better, I don’t know why they are so cruel to make students take classes that are three hours long – but I do know that they’re not that weird.
Is it something you have to worry about? Not really. It’s important, but most Universities set their degrees up so you get all the right semester hours to graduate. If you’re flying solo, you might want to keep a tally on your semester hours. But really, take all the classes you’re supposed to, keep an eye on your electives and how they fit with your degree, and JUST HAVE FUN! Don’t worry about the mumbo or the jumbo, just learn the mambo – that will be far more worth it.
